Pie

Pie

Mom used to make five pies for the corn shelling crew. Back then I didn’t think I liked lard; now I know that it’s food for the gods. My favorite pie was her lemon meringue. She loved lemons and mastered their use in cakes, rolls, cookies, and pies. When I cleaned out her kitchen for the last time, there were four containers of powdery lemonade waiting for a summer that never came.

Today, the pie is cherry sugar, rhubarb tang, and raisin delight. It unifies our last… Continue

Spirit Mound

Hills are never quite tall enough to escape the sounds and sights of life. I try to close my eyes but I need to know if it’s a fertilizer truck or a grain truck that interrupts my solitude. Do I intrude here? Do the spirits know that my ancestors were the ones who turned this sacred site into a pasture? American Bread and Games

I am in something of a quandary. The education business, like everything else in America, has become just that—an industry. And as a service industry, those of us who work in it are customer service agents. If our patrons don’t like our product, they get rid of us and try someone else.

While I agree with NCLB in concept, because I do think teachers should be held accountable for their actions in a classroom, I think its failure is not in the realm of a lack of funding. A poor plan… Continue

My Life is Like Pi

The only thing I can think to write about is this delicious pie, especially the sour cream raisin. The flavor just alters my sensory center and transports me to a higher plain. Did I inherit my taste buds from my father? I know that at least part of my tongue can be attributed to my mother: we both hate mint. But maybe my father passed on his love of sweets to me. The taste of sweetened sour cream still lingers on my tongue and sends messages to my brain: get more, get more. So often I listen… Continue

Beginnings

Today I am in the mood to write about beginnings. This is the end of the institute, but it is the beginning of my time to work with new ideas and technology. It is the beginning of a time to rest, too, but work and rest will have to meld as each day I will awake and follow my summer routines, but I will need to take myself to school to enjoy what will seem like leisurely days (compared to days during the school year) of digging through my file cabinets, surfing through document files on my… Continue

Reminders for Week 2--and beyond

Hi. As promised, here is a posting with reminders about events and tasks for week 2--and beyond. It happens to be a list of ten items! This list has also been sent to you in email, but we thought it would be good to submit it two different ways. Karen and I have been sitting at the Coffee Shop Gallery today (Friday) putting it together.  :-)

  1. Our potluck is this Monday, June 9. Bring a food item--it can be anything, but keep in…
